Fiber Optic Technician Essential Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities – essential and other important duties and responsibilities may include, but aren't limited to the following:

  • Maintains inventory of fabric related to assigned work.
  • Maintains records concerning all functions of assigned work
  • Use computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Perform periodic inspections of assigned equipment and facilities and maintain appropriate records, including building, site and yard maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Test, calibrate, maintain and repair indicating and recording instruments and measuring devices.
  • Participates in policy and standards development.
  • Participates within the development of standards and specifications with other agencies and industry representatives.
  • May assume supervisory duties within the absence of immediate lead/supervisor.
  • Troubleshoots communication cables using copper analyzing equipment, and optical time domain reflectometer, electric meter , light sources, and various other testing tools.
  • Installs, arranges, disconnects, and troubleshoots both copper based communication cable and fiber optical cable for utility facilities and commercial customers; utilizes testing equipment to troubleshoot service disruptions and make necessary repairs.
  • Maintains and updates database of installation, repair work, service requests and work orders; maintains database of the City's dark fiber optic network.
  • Engineers fiber optic installations, and provides technical expertise for the reconfiguration of networks for various commercial companies.
  • Maintains and repairs traffic light standards and associated equipment .
  • Programs engineering timing data into intersection controllers and other devices related to the movement of control of traffic operations.
  • Responds to emergency complaints and locates and repairs malfunctioning traffic light devices.
  • Performs tests on traffic light electronic components; and repairs or replaces parts as necessary.
  • Installs, organizes splices, terminates, and analyzes communication cables, including both copper based communication, and fiber optical cables.Install, test, maintain and repair 120v, 240v, and 480v power circuits.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces street lighting fixtures and lighting standards.
